How to review and remove AI metadata from photos
Inspect the final export, keep an original, clean the appropriate metadata from a sharing copy, and verify the result.

An image made or edited with AI may carry file metadata about the tool or workflow. That information can appear in C2PA provenance, XMP fields, EXIF software fields or PNG text chunks. The presence of a particular field varies by source and export path.
This process is for managing file-level metadata and privacy on a copy you are authorized to share. It does not remove visible content, invisible signals in pixels or a platform's own records.
1. Save the final export and keep the original
Use the JPG, PNG or WebP file that you would actually upload. Make a separate backup before changing metadata. If an editor saves the file again after cleaning, it may add new metadata, so plan to inspect the last export.
2. Inspect the file before changing it
Run a read-only scan and note what is present: C2PA, XMP, EXIF, location fields or PNG text. A scanner can only report structures it supports. If the source requires a full provenance record or creator attribution, retain that information in the original and decide whether removal is appropriate.
3. Clean a sharing copy
Choose an AI-focused mode when you only need supported AI-related fields removed; choose full metadata removal when privacy requires a broader pass. The browser tool rewrites supported JPEG, PNG and WebP metadata without decoding and recompressing their image payload. Removing EXIF orientation can still change how some viewers rotate a photo, so inspect the displayed result.
4. Verify the download and share responsibly
Scan the downloaded copy, open it in an image viewer and compare its orientation and appearance with the original. For a batch, check a representative image from each source or export workflow. Upload the checked copy rather than an older file with a similar name.
- A clean metadata scan is limited to the fields the checker recognizes.
- The site cannot promise that a social platform will omit an AI label.
- Keep required disclosures and provenance when a contract, platform policy or law calls for them.
Perguntas frequentes
Will this change the compressed image payload?
For supported JPEG, PNG and WebP metadata-only cleaning, the compressed image payload is preserved. Orientation display may change if orientation metadata is removed.
Is EXIF-only cleaning sufficient?
It may not be. AI-related information can also be stored in C2PA, XMP or PNG text chunks. Inspect the final export first.
Will a clean file prevent an AI label?
No. Platforms may use other signals and their rules can change. Metadata cleaning is not a guarantee about labels or disclosure obligations.
