XMP, EXIF and C2PA: what each one tells you
A practical comparison of camera metadata, editable descriptive fields and signed provenance, plus a way to inspect them before sharing a file.

A photo can contain several kinds of information outside its visible pixels. EXIF, XMP and C2PA serve different purposes, so removing one does not necessarily remove the others.
The useful first step is to inspect the exact export you plan to share. The metadata in a camera original may differ from the file saved by an editor or downloaded from a generator.
EXIF describes capture details
EXIF commonly records camera model, exposure settings and capture time. Some files also contain GPS coordinates. Whether those fields are present depends on the device, app and export settings. A privacy check should look for location data in the final file, even when the picture itself reveals no location.
XMP carries extensible descriptions
XMP is a format for properties such as title, keywords, creator information and editing details. Applications can define additional fields, so an XMP packet may contain useful attribution or information you would rather keep private. XMP can be embedded in a file or kept in a separate sidecar file.
C2PA is signed provenance
A C2PA Content Credential can record assertions about a file's origin or editing history together with a digital signature and a binding to the asset. It is not simply another EXIF field. A valid credential helps a compatible viewer assess the recorded provenance; it does not prove every claim about the scene or tell you whether an image is good or bad.
Choose the right check before making a copy
Use a read-only checker on the final export. If location privacy is the issue, review EXIF and GPS. If a client needs a title or creator credit, inspect XMP and IPTC before removing anything. If provenance matters for disclosure, preserve the original credential and follow the applicable policy.
- Keep an untouched original in a private archive.
- Choose selective or full metadata removal for the copy you will share.
- Check the downloaded copy again, and be aware that reopening it in an editor may write new metadata.
- Removing metadata cannot control a platform's labels or pixel-based signals.
Sık sorulan sorular
Are EXIF and XMP the same?
No. EXIF is commonly used for capture details; XMP is an extensible framework for descriptive and editing properties. A file may contain both.
Does removing EXIF remove a C2PA credential?
No. C2PA uses its own provenance structures. Check the exported file for each type of metadata you need to manage.
Does a valid C2PA credential prove the image is true?
No. Validation assesses the credential and its relationship to the asset, not the truth of the depicted event.
